Air Duct Cleaning in Pasadena, TX

What Pasadena homes do to ductwork
Waiting costs more here than it does inland. A leaking return does not stay the same size. Salt-laden Gulf air speeds up corrosion on exposed metal duct and plenum seams, so a pinhole becomes a split. The return pulls attic air all summer. That is how sulfur compounds, flare soot and fine particulate end up in a back bedroom. Residents near the Ship Channel petrochemical corridor report chemical odor carried through return leakage. The odor is the symptom. The seam is the problem.
This is an industrial east-side city with heavy 1950s-60s refinery-worker housing. Small single-story slab ranches. Original galvanized sheet metal ducts. A single central return, usually in a hallway ceiling. Off Spencer Highway and Red Bluff Road we see three or four generations of equipment replacement on an unchanged duct layout. New condenser, new coil, same 70-year-old trunk.
Check it yourself. Pull the hall return grille and look at the filter track. If there is daylight around the boot, you are breathing attic.
Honest limit: if the galvanized trunk is rusted through at the drive cleats, cleaning alone will not stop the odor. Sealing or replacing those sections is the fix. We say so before anyone starts brushing.

Frequently Asked Questions
I keep smelling something chemical inside the house when the AC kicks on. Is that coming from the ducts?
Often it's the return side rather than the ducts themselves. Most of the older houses here were built with one central return, and when that return cavity or the plenum seams have opened up, the system pulls air from the crawl space, wall cavities or attic instead of the house. Out here that air carries whatever the Ship Channel corridor is putting out that day: sulfur smell, soot, fine particulate. Cleaning the ducts helps with what's already settled inside them, but if the odor comes back every time the blower starts, the real fix is sealing the return and plenum connections. We'll tell you which one you're dealing with rather than just cleaning and leaving.
My house still has the original metal ductwork from when it was built. Can it even be cleaned?
Usually yes. Galvanized sheet metal from the 1950s and 60s holds up to brushing and vacuum better than flex duct does, which is one advantage of the older Pasadena housing stock. The question is condition, not age. Salt air off the Gulf works on exposed metal, and we commonly find corrosion at the seams, at the plenum, and anywhere the duct runs through an unconditioned attic. If a section has rusted thin or the joints have separated, we'll show you before we start running equipment through it, because cleaning a duct that's already leaking doesn't accomplish much.
What usually turns out to be wrong in houses around here?
The pattern we see most is a duct layout that never changed while the equipment changed three or four times. Someone put a modern higher-static system on a 60-year-old trunk and branch layout sized for the original unit, so the boots are undersized, the single return is undersized, and air velocity is wrong throughout. That shows up as dust settling fast after cleaning, uneven rooms, and a system that runs longer than it should. Second most common is seam corrosion and failed mastic at the plenum from the salt and humidity. Both are findable in a walkthrough.
How fast can someone get out to Pasadena?
Pasadena is a regular part of our route, so scheduling is typically within a couple of days, and we do hold slots for same-day and next-day when something is clearly wrong: strong odor through the vents, visible debris blowing out of a register, or a system that just got replaced with the new air handler pulling through filthy old duct. Call in the morning and we can usually tell you by that afternoon whether same day is realistic. Traffic along the industrial corridor affects arrival windows more than distance does, so we give a window rather than a to-the-minute time.
